What is the purpose of the safety system? If you notice any of our clients where the operational excellence system is being implemented, you’ll see the main artifact: a balanced scorecard.  If you come  to a daily or monthly meeting here are some things you’ll see, which are also visible on the balanced scorecard: 1. Safety is the first priority listed on the balanced scorecard 2. All daily meetings start with safety report out and problem solving sheets 3. All monthly BSC meetings start with reporting on the top 3 safety problems 4. Safety suggestions (solutions) are worth more points...

Balanced Scorecard The Need for a Balanced Scorecard Refresher Simple FAQ: Monthly Balanced Scorecard (BSC) Check What is the Balanced Scorecard (BSC)? The Balanced Scorecard is a visual representation of several processes coming together to help us act and adjust every thirty days in order to meet or exceed our annual targets for improvement. What processes are coming together at the Balanced Scorecard? The top row (Metrics) and the bottom row (support) represent the results of the current year’s Annual Planning process, which has produced an Annual Plan for improvement and has validated...

Safety Roles and Responsibilities safety roles and responsibilities So, your organization / hospital is ready for the OE Safety System.  One component of implementing the safety system is training and implementation of the safety roles and responsibilities of group leaders, team leaders, and team members to the steering committee and those responsible for safety system implementation. In the OE system, safety isn’t just a priority of the safety committee, it’s a priority for everyone! Safety Roles and Responsibilities:Group Leader 1. Be a role model for safety 2. Monitor safety checks 3....

safety system Safety System After the steering committee is well into the cultural change phase of the Operational Excellence System implementation, it’s time to connect the top level team with a pilot hall utilizing the safety system. Well into the cultural change phase for the steering committee (top level team at the organization / hospital) you will see a few distinct things: 1. daily meeting is meeting of exceeding expectations. 2. Physical balanced scorecard is up and functional 3. Team is using problem solving sheets and board to select top problems Prerequisites for Safety System Here’s...

big mistake The Mistake of Your Life What will you do when you make the mistake of your life? I took my current job as the executive director for our non-profit, for-fee center in 2005.  Previously the center had been fully grant funded.  As I studied the center, the job, the strategy for the future, the current business case (or lack of one), I determined that the only way we could execute our mission – essentially executive coaching – was to run a successful business not run a successful non-profit.  If we could pull of the former, the latter would come.  Another way to think...

First off I’d like to thank KCOE for this opportunity to submit this guest blog about 5S. My name is Fred Findley and I’ve been fortunate to experience KCOE and their amazing Operational Excellence System for the past year. This brief blog is a story of how I took the information I learned from KCOE about 5S and applied it to my own personal (and sometimes cluttered) life. If after reading this blog you have any suggestions for me or my 5S system please comment below. If you have questions about 5S or any other topic, please leave them below and the KCOE guys might just respond...

One of my former CO OP students came to visit me last night.  We had an excellent time catching up.  During one part of the discussion, he lamented that his current position often tries his patience.  He is a very relationship-oriented person who naturally and easily keeps relationships flowing.  So, it strikes him as “odd” that some people don’t relate well to him simply because he is a supervisor. His dilemma is one that is timeless and that is found right where the work is being done: the classic divide between “management” and the “workers”. The dilemma reflects a gap...

north american operational excellence summit Summit to Summit To the left, you’ll see a photo of me (Steve) at the top of Kings Peak, the highest point in the state of Utah. It was about a 30-mile hike I underwent with 2 friends. 20 of those miles were leading up to the base of the mountain, which was near the tree line. One friend and experienced climber / hiker, Justin, took the role of our leader. He’s done similar hikes in the Tetons, a few hours away from Kings, made sure we had the right equipment, and had strategic GPS coordinates to check along the way, and keep us focused on...

Safety System | Roles and Responsibilities Contest safety first Currently I am leading a project in the warehouse at Fibrek, in Fairmont, WV. Fibrek, formally known as SFK Pulp, is a pulp producer that essentially recycles used paper (cups, office paper, etc) to produce pulp (which is then used to create paper by other companies). The warehouse project consists of a safety assessment, report out, and improvement idea generation. After the project is successful, we will then implement the safety system throughout the mill and also replicate it at the other mills in the USA and Canada. The...

There are few things in the Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma/Continuous Improvement/ Kaizen/Toyota Production System buzz-word-world as viral as Bruce Hamilton and the Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership. You’ve seen his face. He’s taught you about value and waste and looking at processes with an eye for improvement. He’s taken you to his personal workshop to demonstrate these principles. And the funny thing is, you’re probably scratching your head thinking, “Bruce who?” If you don’t know him as Bruce, then you probably know him as The Toast Guy. Hamilton’s video,...
