5S +1 Definitions

+1: Safety!

Sort: Remove any unnecessary items from the workplace.  Keep the necessary items in the workplace.  Any questionable items – red tag them. The red tag area is a holding area for items / tools / materials that do not have a standardized place

Straighten: Arrange items so they are easy to find and use.  Use visual management when you can by outlining locations, labeling tools, and specifying what goes where.

Shine: Clean to both see and prevent problems.  Create a daily to-do list at the end of every shift.

Standardize: Standardize the area so checks become simple and easy.  Standardize the daily to-do list (workplace restoration) to occur daily.

Sustain: Daily checks by team leader – are the end of shift restorations happening?  Develop an audit where the team leader checks the workplace weekly.  Create problem solving sheets for missed targets.  Review scores monthly via the monthly balanced scorecard meeting.
